Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
